I'm fine!

"I was formula fed and I'm fine."
"I rode forward facing and I'm fine."
"I was spanked and I'm fine."

Are you fine? Really?

This is an awesome article in which the author discusses the illogicality of such arguments...

Wow - I know this article is trying to make valid points, but I gotta say I thought that it was WAY over the top. Mom-on-mom guilt at it's finest.

I've gotta agree with Alyssa here. While the phrase itself is often used in ways that bother me too, I think she missed the mark and found the way she presented her opinions to be very upsetting :(

Agree with the others, and I find that she uses the same style of argumentation at points when discussing the style of parenting she recommends.

While I agree with her about the illogical nature of the "...and I turned out just fine" argument, this post does more than simply argue against it. Even though she says at the beginning of the article:

"this is not an attack on the people who do these things, it's an attack on using faulty reasoning as an excuse."

...it really seems to be exactly what she says it's not: "an attack of people who do these things".

It's too bad, too, because I do see her arguments, and I would consider myself to be a researcher - one who seeks well-executed, empirical, unbiased research data...and so I appreciate this aspect of her post. But I think the way she writes and presents the information borders on offensive, and only serves to alienate and polarize people.

I found it to be very acerbic in tone and basically agree with the others. There are nicer ways of presenting this information to people and to be honest, it makes crunchy, granola, attachment (whatever your adjective) parents sound extreme and nutty and would turn people off instead of the likely intelligent and thoughtful people most attachment parents are in real life. She missed the mark.

I think she makes a good point! Because I am a homeschool mom, I have actually been asked why I wouldn't send my children to public school because I turned out just fine - and I tell them that NO I DIDN't turn out fine...I have all kinds of issues that I deal with each and every day, lol!

I agree with her on several of the issues she posted about, but didn't feel attacked and was not offended by things she said about things I disagree with.

I certainly agree with some of her points but her presentation could have been better. I speak for me but I certainly wasnt offended by her post, just put off by the whole thing. The message got lost which is unfortunate because some of it was very valid.

Sorry for the double post...my thoughts got broken up by a crying baby :)

i only skimmed through this, but isn't it inevitable that if you live life, stuff will hurt you? i find it hard to believe that anyone gets through life unscathed. what's the point of this article? to make moms feel bad for not being perfect? i don't get it. this woman seems kind of unhealthy.

Mariclare I totally agree with you. Anything can be fine for someone, but ruin someone else's life. I am still afraid to go out of the house because I was raped, but I know girls who were raped and aren't even upset. It was just something that happened. I know kids who are teased in high school who go on to help others, and some who take to killing themselves or others. I think how things affect us depends on US. And we all just need to do what we feel is best for ourselves and our families. ALL our situations are different and there is no "right answer" that fits everyone.
